How WiFi extenders actually work

Most range extenders follow a similar setup pattern. These general steps are educational only; official instructions may vary by model and manufacturer.

1. Power & Position

Plug in close to your router for first-time setup. You'll move it to its final spot once configured.

2. Join Setup Network

Most Netgear extenders broadcast an open WiFi during setup (for example NETGEAR_EXT). Connect to it from your phone or laptop.

3. Open Setup Page

Visit the brand's setup URL or default IP printed on the device in any browser to launch the wizard.

4. Pick Host Network

Select your main router's WiFi and enter its password. The extender will rebroadcast it.

5. Relocate

Unplug and move the extender halfway between the router and your dead zone.

6. Verify Signal

Check the signal LED — it should be solid green/blue. Red or amber means it's too far away.

The Golden Rule of Placement

A WiFi extender is only as good as the signal it receives. If it shows fewer than two bars from your router, it cannot magically deliver more than that to your devices. Move it closer until the link LED is strong — then check coverage in the dead zone.
